Why do some fans consider the original ECW championship a world title, but not the current one?

I have heard it is because mostly mid carders hold it in WWE, and it is at the Equivalent of the IC & Us titles, but in the original ECW, most of the stars who held the title, like Taz & Rhyno, wasn't really WWE main event talent, they was only mid carders in WWE when they left ECW, so that explanation really doesn't seem to make sense to me.
