Experience with Rosetta stone software?

I would like to know what peoples experience with Rosetta stone is? Is it functional, does it work? Is it only a supplement to structured educational type courses? Does Rosetta stone bring about fluency or is only for travel knowledge? I've found it very difficult to find a professional unbiased review of language software... Perhaps there is a better software suite out there that folk on here recommend?
